Its been WAY TOO HOT around here, and I can only imagine how uncomfortable it must be for Rivet who has all of that gorgeous poofy fur. Last Saturday, on my way to the warehouse (normally I don't go on Saturday, but whatever) Rivet and I stopped in at Petsmart to buy treats for her and an ice cold soda for me. Then we both noticed the cute little wading pools, and I figured it was worth the $9 to see if she would like to cool off in one. Given the fact that I grew up in a "behaviorist household" I am prone to do experiments finding the most effective ways to train, and how to instill happy doggie associations with things. This was a prime opportunity. I knew that other papillons seem to enjoy water, and I wanted to make sure there were no associations with the dreaded "bath time". There is a rule, Rivet never gets in the pool unless its because she wants to - I have never placed her in there, if she is in the pool, its because she's jumped in. Now, that being said, at first I had to build up some nice associations with being in the pool - I lured her in with a favorite treat - after that happened a few times, I noticed she wanted to go out on the patio more and more to hop in the pool and just walk around, chase a ball in there, or "dig" in the water for fun or to cool off. This morning, she has asked to "swim" about 3 times - I guess she likes it now!!! Have you ever seen someone have so much fun in 1" of water in the bottom of a plastic wading pool??

I don't get it, but sometimes, as a human, it is difficult to fully grasp the logic in the mind of a dog. They really do have their own agenda sometimes. And well, sometimes that agenda resembles salad. She doesn't do it often, but sometimes Rivet likes to have an absolute hissy fit about something - and this particular day that thing was a tomato. I was minding my own business, working out and was interrupted by what you see below:

Interestingly though, I found out that some papillons like tomatoes - watch this guy eat them right off the plants!!

Rivet really likes these, they're called "Moo Tubes" and they're pieces of specially prepared and dried cow esophagus, apparently a nice natural source of glucosamine (good for joints and connective tissue, I prefer to take mine in tablet form in the morning, but to each their own). Rivet enjoys hers the most when someone else acts like they want it too - as you can see from the video:

This past Saturday, Rivet turned 2. She had so much fun the first half of Saturday that she slept the rest of the day away, but it was her birthday and that's what she wanted. It all started at 9:30am when her playgroup met at a local dog park and she hung around with 20 of her friends and made some new ones too. Then we went to a local dog bakery and let her pick out some treats. After coming home and eating, she then fell in a heap and slept and slept and slept.

Today she is doing her best to keep me from studying - while atop her birthday afghan made by my Mom - Rivet just LOVES anything soft and pink.

I went to 2 dog parties in one day! One at a dog park, and the other at my veterinarian's office. I had so much fun that I fell asleep in the car all the way home - and then some. The dog park party had a crazy costume contest as you can see, and my vet's party had some fun agility stuff laying around. I'd never seen this sort of thing before and ran all over it just to get at some seriously tasty treats. Isn't my outfit totally fabulous? Not only can I jump hurdles, I can jump hurdles while wearing my little kimono from NYC....

Adrienne says that I can see this new silly teen movie that has a papillon in it when it comes out on DVD. Of course, I don't understand why the doggie is only in the end of the trailer and not the star, but whatever. I'll have a new video up soon - she bought me a new t-shirt yesterday its purple and has my favorite rhinestones on it. Its from Paw Park Place, the owner of the store likes me, and her super spoiled (maybe more spoiled that me!) blonde long haired chihuahua named BarbieDoll is almost used to me - she was nice this time and didn't even growl... she's one of those jealous girls, I think she has ear envy or something.

So sorry I've slacked off on uploading new videos lately - but we just moved to a brand new place and I LOVE IT! My bestest friend Shirley lives in the building next door and there are dogs EVERYWHERE. I've made so many friends between here and trips to the dog park that I'm going to have to start writing them down! I'm even thinking of starting a microdog playgroup for little guys 10lbs and under like me.

Day 2 of getting Rivet the Papillon puppy used to a mini skateboard - she seems to like it. I'm still getting used to clicker training while holding a camera at the same time, so sorry for the shaky cam, I'm jugging a clicker, a camera, and a handful of treats.

In case anyone is concerned, she will only be on the tennis court and going at slow speeds - she's so tiny (and that was the smallest skateboard I could find!).

Shirley and I had SO MUCH FUN on Saturday. We went to a Luau at Bone Jour. Played, met a bunch of other doggies, got our pictures taken - together and by ourselves (though I wasn't too sure about that emo guy putting his hand on my butt! Hands off, buster, I'm an Internet Celebrity!). One of the best parts was that Shirley's owner had made little flower bits for us to wear so that we looked extra special at the party. Here we are wearing them and on our way to Bone Jour:

Anyway... I'm a lucky girl because I ended up winning one of the raffle prizes - a birthday party set! Shirley thinks I should have my dog party at Sam Snead's because apparently they even have a dog menu! I'll have to check that out! Anyway, next month we'll all have dog party hats, round dog placemats, invites, and matching party favors!

What better way to start the week than a morning game of tennis... well... doggie tennis at least, where the ball falls short of regulation size, but tiny mouth size at 1.75" in diameter. Oh, and we only use half the court and forget about that net - its only good for chewing on, but Adrienne doesn't let me. She says that as soon as she finds her racquet that she's going to play some "people tennis" and needs the net to not have holes in it. Whatever... people and their weird demands. As you might be able to tell, I'm wearing my favorite canvas "bling" harness that she made for me - its important to look good when you're playing tennis.

From Adrienne: I like for Rivet to have one of these dental chews every now and then - they help with the dreaded "dog breath" and she seems to enjoy them a little more than having me constantly chase her with a toothbrush. Here we are playing "the greeny game" and needless to say it was a success, she chewed and ate the whole thing over the course of the evening.

This tastes good too - does your food make you dance? I could only imagine what it must look like inside of Krispy Kreme with all you humans running around dancing and scratching your backs on the ground - I might have to sneak in there one day and watch!

Mega Dognoodle!

I don't know what they put in this heartworm prevention stuff, but MAN DOES IT TASTE GREAT! It tastes so good that I feel the need to roll around on my back and do a little dance. Yum YUM YUM!

Attack the takeout!

From Adrienne: I was SO hungry when I got home from work last night that I basically tore the food out of the takeout bag which then landed on the floor - ok, I did get food from one of my all time favorite restaurants so that had something to do with it too. Rivet seemed to like the lingering lasagna smells of the bag and proceeded to do her multitask play. Observe:

Another DIY dog toy - the Dognoodle!

From Adrienne: everytime Rivet and I have visited Shirley, those two have really liked playing tug of war with a certain favorite toy... Shirley's owner and I decided that we should make one that is longer, and with more than one squeaker, kind of like those "fun noodles" kids play with at the beach/pool. This past weekend, I made the first one to our specifications. Below the video I'll have a short description so you can make one of your own. Rivet REALLY likes this toy, she started chewing on the long end of it while I was still sewing it up!

How to make a Dognoodle:

Stuff you need:
Large scrap of furry fleece (I used part of a 1 yard remnant)
At least 3 replacement "squeakers" (available from Petsmart)
A scrap or two of poly batting
Poly fill
Sewing machine, thread, duh.

OK! Depending on the size of your dog, you can change these approximate measurements around, or depending on the size of the scraps you've procured... Here's what I made: Cut a long strip of the furry fleece (you may want to do this outside as it goes EVERYWHERE, plan on vacuuming afterwards in all cases) approx 8" wide by 36" long. Fold the fabric strip in half, long-ways, with the "wrong side" on the outside - the furry part is on the inside of the strip. Pin along one end and the side so that the fleece doesn't crawl too much when you try and machine sew it - it is a weird and wonky fabric to sew... Sew along the bottom and side, removing pins. Turn the tube right side out. Loosely wrap one of the squeakers in a few turns of a strip of quilt batting and stuff it down into the bottom of the fabric tube. Stuff in enough poly fill to bring you to the middle of the tube. Wrap another squeaker with some batting and put that in. Put in enough poly fill to almost the end, but with plenty of room for another squeaker assembly, and a spare 2" of fabric. Add the last squeaker assembly, then fold in the raw edges of the fabric at the end of the tube. Sew up the folded under ends with a sturdy stitch - I went over it three times with the machine. Make sure the stuffing is even in the noodle then give it to your dog! You of course have the option of adding even more squeakers during the stuffing part of the project.

A flattering soft focus

So there she was with that camera in my face again - saying that she just wanted to record a little bit of random cuteness, but I decided that I wanted a more soft focus, you know, like certain famous interview journalist women on tv. So I licked the lense - seemed like the right thing to do - and went back to chewing.

As you may have noticed, just a couple of applications of this "Eye Envy" stuff and my tearstains are really going away! I hope they post my "before and after" pictures on their website!!! I'll brag if they do.

Yesterday I visited "Aunt" Kim and "Uncle" Billy - I really liked their house with the slick tile floors I could practically skate on! And they had this bird that freaked out so much about me he fell off his perch! They also had this fun cat toy that I destroyed - I liked it so much that my owner decided to make a "dog" version of it this morning for me out of thin macrame cord she had laying around. She tied a bunch of knots in it and added little knotted pieces of cord at the end - with a small bundle of furry polar fleece - I LOVE that stuff!!!

Monday is always a busy day, so its good to be able to do two things at once, right? I thought so, but then I tried to carry my mini tennis ball and bite on my bed at the same time - it didn't really work so well... but I had fun anyway!

A mystery solved an a confrontation

From Adrienne: For the past few days, Rivet had been sneaking off into the bedroom - and giving one or two what I would call warning barks. I would go in there and find nothing, no weird sounds outside or anything. This morning, she hopped up on the bed, looked directly at the nightstand and barked once. She had been barking at my 2 stuffed animals: a chihuahua and a dachshund.

I wanted her to know that they were fake, so I staged a little introduction:

No fake dogs were harmed in the making of this video, they just got slobbered on a little bit. Hopefully this is the end of barking at fake dogs. If not, its pretty funny when she does it.

I was minding my own business this morning when someone put my lounging bed over me - I couldn't see out! So I did what I think most of us would do - I ran around in circles! I discovered that I could get out, but also that I wanted to run around a little more... watch me watch me!!!

WOW this tastes SO GOOD. Its all stringy and minty and wow its fun to stick your teeth in it. I had a really good weekend - a picnic on Saturday, and more playtime with my friend Shirley on Sunday - she's gotten even bigger! Now she's 21 lbs - over 5 times my size, but I didn't let that stop me from picking on her a little bit.
